The Asteroid Moth, Brown-Hooded Owlet & Gray-Hooded Owlet
The Asteroid Moth. Their caterpillars eat asters and goldenrod.
Brown-hooded Owlet. Note the raised tufts along the abdomen. This is the only Brown-hooded Owlet that has visited my home moth lights. Photographed July 17, 2016.
Gray-hooded Owlet. This is also my only sighting of the species. Photographed September 6, 2016.
Asteroid Moths come to my lights in small numbers from late July through September.
The Asteroid Moth in profile. Moths in this genus are called "sharks" in England, presumably because the tuft on their head resembles a dorsal fin or a shark snout.
