Datanas and Prominents

This is an Angus's Datana. Note the dark brown head and scalloped fringe on the wings. This moth is more grayish in color than most Datanas. I have only found two individuals at my lights so far, one on July 26, 2015, and another on June 18, 2024.

Another Sigmoid Prominent, photographed at Hocking Hills on May 13, 2023.

Angle-lined Prominent, closely related to the species above. This is my only sighting of the species. Photographed May 1, 2022 at Hocking Hills.

Walnut Caterpillar Moth. This is one of several Datana species which are very tricky to tell apart. Walnut Caterpillar Moths are by far the most common Datana species I see.

Another Contracted Datana, photographed July 4, 2016. I found this moth at Shawnee State Forest (southern Ohio).

This moth is a Sigmoid Prominent. It is the only one that has visited my home moth lights. Found on August 16, 2024. I have also seen this species at Hocking Hills.

Contracted Datana. I have not yet found this species at my home lights. This individual was photographed in Adams County, Ohio, on July 21, 2024.

Another Walnut Caterpillar Moth. They visit my lights all summer long, from May through August.
